Did you know that the CARE Program publishes a comprehensive guide to HIV resources in the Long Beach area? What started as a few pages written for those who are newly diagnosed, is now a 26-page guide that covers everything from disclosing your status to your partner, finding accurate and up-to-date resources on line, understanding your labs, how the medications work, accessing care and more.
The guide is also helpful for those who have been living with HIV for a while, but are new to Long Beach or the surrounding communities. Not just a list of services at the CARE Program, the guide lists all five community clinics, all the infectious disease specialists for those with private insurance, and the immunology clinics at the VA and Kaiser.
You can also use the guide to find out more information about pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP and PEP), local gay- and HIV-friendly 12-step meetings, support groups, legal services, housing services and more.
Because of all the recent changes in health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), the guide offers a primer on new health insurance options, as well as information on programs that can help pay for part of your premiums for persons living with HIV.
